4.7 PowerTech V8

The modern V8 that replaced the Magnum in the WJ

For the Grand Cherokee WJ, Chrysler retired the old small-block Magnums and rolled out an all-new V8: the 4.7 PowerTech, with a single overhead cam (SOHC) —more modern, smoother and more efficient.

A new-school V8

The 4.7 (287 cu in) broke with the Magnums' OHV tradition: it uses SOHC with two valves per cylinder, a timing chain and an architecture built to spin more smoothly. In base form it made 235 hp and 295 lb·ft; from 2002 came the High Output (H.O.) version with 265 hp and 330 lb·ft, reserved for the range-topping Overland.

It pairs with the 45RFE and 545RFE automatics and, depending on trim, the Quadra-Trac II or Quadra-Drive drive systems.

Quirks

It's a good engine, but temperature-sensitive: neglecting the cooling system can lead to detonation and, in extreme cases, valve-seat damage. Staying on top of oil changes and a healthy radiator is the best insurance.
